Mallorca, discreet luxury
Michael Douglas likes to go to Mallorca when the almond trees are bloomming, Claudia Schiffer celebrates her birthday inescapably on the Balearic island and Toni Kroos was at his home in Cala d’Or when his contract with Real Madrid was announced.
Mallorca celebrities seek privacy above all. The mansions in the hills and berthed yachts are perfect for those who want to spend a few days away from the spotlight. The celebrities who choose Mallorca are not the type to tell their holidays in Instagram.
We learned Michael Douglas stayed a few weeks ago in his Balearic house due to a picture Catherine Zeta-Jones hung on Facebook. Bruce Springsteen has been seen this summer when he came out of his yacht Rising Sun for few hours. Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay, spends many summers here: one year robbers entered into the mansion he had rented. Even Annie Lennox has left Scotland and now lives on the island. Orlando Bloom relaxed in Ibiza after his fight with Justin Bieber. But it is virtually impossible to find them.
Unlike Ibiza, throughout Mallorca there is only a fixed paparazi.
The Real Club Nautico de Palma is the center of the city in August. After some difficult years for lack of sponsors, the abandonment of almighty sponsor Puig, and the delicate situation of its main public relations, the Royal Family, has adapted to the new era. The Club no longer manages budgets of millions of euros for the Copa del Rey de Vela (most famous sailing course), they have had to adjust to 400,000 this year. The City Council provides a symbolic amount of 12,000 euros to the event each year. This week the club received the visit of exmodel Antonia Dell’Atte, Andrés Velencoso and Carlos Moya. Probably for the arrival of the Kings, this year 365 journalists have been accredited, about 70 more than in the previous edition. But only 21 of the 122 participating ships have sponsor.
Luckily the saviors of the course are now the sea lovers magnates which hvave been now for several years participating in the competition with their boats. Nikklas Zennström, founder of Skype, races with two boats while his yacht Mirage is moored in the port of Palma.
Puerto Portals, is a this paradigmatic enclave of luxury and discretion that characterizes the island. Here the yachts modeled down as do Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches. Next year Puerto Portals will host a regatta, after years without competition. Impossible to get a name on the occupants of the dozens of impressive yachts that rest on the docks.
